Family of Apps
Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and other services. Advertising supplies most revenue. Segment profit includes other services and shared costs; it is not a pure advertising profit figure.
Meta Platforms · How recommendations, advertising and reinvestment connect.
Selected annual observations from the historical dataset. Later interim periods are presented separately in the interactive history.
Figures use the same dataset as the interactive history, displayed in the stated units with up to six decimal places. Reporting periods are not editorial review dates. Missing values are not zero. Date definitions · Published corrections

Meta Platforms operates social and messaging services including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads. It earns most of its revenue by selling advertising that helps businesses reach people using its apps. Its Reality Labs business develops virtual and augmented reality products, alongside the infrastructure and product development that support the wider group.
Audience measures describe reach. Advertising impressions and prices describe monetisation, not advertisers’ own returns. Family of Apps earnings and Reality Labs losses remain separate; capital expenditure affects group cash.
More ads can raise current revenue while weakening the user experience. Infrastructure uses cash when purchased and creates depreciation later. More capacity does not itself establish improved advertiser outcomes.
Operating interpretation; not a forecast. Dated evidence and disclosure limits remain in the metrics and source sections.
Audience → advertising → app earnings → investment → cash
People and creators provide the foundation. Better recommendations can earn attention; better ads can help businesses find customers. The loop strengthens when both users and advertisers continue receiving value.
Improve content ranking, ad matching, creative tools and the infrastructure supporting them.
Investment & cash flow ↗Useful content, connections and messaging give people reasons to return.
Daily active people & engagement ↗Relevant advertisements can generate more profitable sales from a given budget.
Advertiser outcomes & pricing ↗More ad opportunities and greater willingness to bid can expand advertising revenue.
Impressions, prices & revenue ↗Revenue must cover people, infrastructure, safety, product development and other running costs.
Family of Apps profit & margin ↗Operating cash supports equipment investment, new products and other uses of capital.
Operating cash flow, capex & FCF ↗↻ Reinvestment feeds the existing apps; new AI products and Reality Labs also require their own evidence of returns.
Advertisers buy access to potential customers. If an ad produces more profitable sales, a business may be willing to bid more or expand its budget. Meta can then earn more from the same audience. Advertisers must still receive an attractive return after any price increase.
More advertisements alone do not establish a stronger business. Excessive ad frequency can weaken the user experience. Higher average prices can reflect currencies, geography and demand as well as better ad performance.

Suppose AI helps advertisers generate twice as many profitable sales from the same £100 of advertising. How could Meta benefit even if user numbers and the number of ads stay unchanged?
Better results can support higher bids and larger budgets. With a fixed number of ads, Meta can earn more per ad. The improvement is more durable when advertisers still receive enough value to keep spending. Higher revenue must also justify the investment that produced the improvement.
Start with the main measures. Open a card to see why it matters, how it is calculated and what it cannot tell us.
Reported observations, calculations and missing values are labelled. Compare like periods; quarterly and half-year cash flows are not annualised.
Management's selected examples are useful evidence, but do not form a complete, comparable time series. Product milestones are not automatically period-end balances.
Themes from our research, expressed as operating hypotheses and evidence to follow.
Connections, creators, advertiser tools and distribution can make a large platform useful. These advantages differ by product: a messaging network is not the same as an advertising auction or a frontier AI model.
Test: repeat usage, engagement and advertiser outcomes. Users and advertisers can use competing services, so scale alone does not establish an enduring monopoly.
Recommendations, ad matching and creative tools can improve the economics of an existing audience. The useful outcome is better engagement or advertiser results at a cost the business can support.
Test: dated performance evidence alongside ad growth, Family of Apps margins and cash generation. Aggregate growth does not isolate AI's causal contribution.
Meta introduced Muse as an agent that can carry out tasks, with free access and paid plans. Its October 2026 announcement added Muse Wonder models and developer distribution. These product announcements do not establish standalone profitability.
Test: repeat use, paid conversion, retention, successful task completion and serving cost. No complete revenue, profit or unit-cost series is entered here.
New surfaces can use existing distribution and advertiser relationships. The Q2 2026 call reported Threads passing 500m monthly active users and a global advertising expansion. Monthly users are not daily users, revenue or profit.
Test: retention, ad load, monetisation and incremental costs. Standalone Threads financials are not disclosed in the selected reports. Paid WhatsApp messaging is included in Family of Apps other revenue.
Compare revenue with costs and operating loss. Costs increased about 72% from 2021 to 2025; H1 2026 costs were only 0.4% below H1 2025. That is limited recent stabilisation following substantial expansion.
Reality Labs develops wearables, virtual and augmented reality hardware, software and content. Reported segment revenue, costs and operating loss describe completed periods; the selected reports do not isolate Reality Labs capital expenditure.
Test: demand and revenue growth alongside cost control, with sustained loss reduction.
Capex falling is not the goal by itself. Investment must eventually produce enough additional cash to justify its cost. Infrastructure can support several businesses, making a precise advertising-only return difficult to establish.
Test: operating cash flow, capital spending, FCF and future lease or purchase commitments. Standard FCF does not include every acquisition or strategic investment.
The 2026 proxy records Zuckerberg's voting power at 60.8% as of 1 April. His 2025 salary was $1, with no bonus or equity award; security and other compensation are separate. Other named executives had 200%-of-salary target bonuses and substantial equity compensation.
Interpretation: ownership and equity pay create financial exposure, while concentrated control limits other shareholders' influence over spending. Neither guarantees disciplined allocation.
Restrictions on data use can affect targeting and measurement. Harmful content or scam advertising can damage trust. Competition, advertiser budgets and economic conditions can weaken demand even when the technology improves.
Test: engagement, ad pricing by region, changes to measurement, compliance costs and legal disclosures. Company risk factors describe exposures; they do not establish that every risk will occur.
Primary documents, calculation methods and disclosure boundaries. This is a dated research snapshot, not a live feed.
From January 2025, Meta extended the estimated lives of most servers and network assets to 5.5 years. The disclosed effect reduced 2025 depreciation by $2.92bn. This raises accounting profit relative to the former estimate without itself reducing the cash paid for equipment. Note 1 ↗
Legal costs, severance, tax payments and working-capital movements can distort short comparisons. Reported values remain intact; no automatic adjusted earnings or normalised FCF series is asserted.
No complete platform-wide advertiser profit or incremental ROAS series is entered. Time spent and conversion tests are selected disclosures. Standalone advertising cash flow, Reality Labs capex, Threads profit and new AI-product unit economics remain unavailable. Missing values are never treated as zero.
Dataset observations are historical; management guidance is labelled and kept outside realised series. No causal AI return is inferred from correlations between investment and subsequent growth.
